About This Quote

Where are our Men of abilities? Why do they not come forth to save their Country? -The American Revolution was a war, and a civil war at that, fought between the British and the Colonists. The cause of this war was very simple, as the famous quotation by Benjamin Franklin, “Where are our Men of abilities? Why do they not come forth to save their Country” demonstrates. In 1776, the American colonies were governed by the British. If America was to survive as a self-governing nation, it would have been necessary to have men who were able to govern themselves.

It was necessary for these men to take control of government and stop being ruled by a foreign government. This is why Benjamin Franklin referred to them as “Men of abilities”. Even though the colonist did not have enough men of ability at the time, that did not mean that they could not continue fighting.

In fact, they had to fight even harder because they knew that the British had more men with abilities than them. However, after a few years of fighting, it became clear that they would have to give up their fight against Britain because of the huge army of British soldiers. What would have happened if they gave up? Their country may not be in existence today if they didn’t take the chance to fight back when given the opportunity.
